Many years ago I thought Zinfandel meant a light pink fruity “beginners” wine which of course was my clear favourite and I never passed on the opportunity to buy a bottle Beringers. But then came the day I realized Zinfandel was anything but this juvenile wine. The varietal is friendlier than Shiraz but without any loss of complexity and diversity. So in honor of my dear friend Brad…who is Niagara ambassador for zin…I thought I’d profile one that we enjoyed recently at dinner with fellow classmates.

Caymus 2006 Zinfandel- We decanted this wine, and it only got better as the night progressed. A smooth and rich palate with hints of spice and substantial red fruit, this wine was enjoyable on its own and had structure to stand up to some serious dishes.
